A wallet made on a balcony became the starting point for a business that now brings people from both banks of the Dniester/Nistru River together.
On the Left Bank, Republic of Moldova, Evghenii Kovalenko, founder of ONIM, creates handmade leather goods tailored to each customer. What began as an attempt to make a wallet for himself gradually grew into a full-time craft. Almost six years later, he works closely with customers to select the leather, materials and design for their individual products.
For a small workshop, logistical challenges can make accessing materials and equipment difficult, limiting opportunities to grow.
Through the Peace Dividend Initiative (PDI) Moldova SME Acceleration Programme, supported by the Swiss Cooperation in Moldova, ONIM has acquired a cutting press, a sewing machine and additional equipment that speeds up production. Tailored mentorship is also helping Evghenii strengthen his approach to marketing and business development.
Alongside his custom orders, Evghenii hosts leatherworking masterclasses for participants from both banks of the Dniester/Nistru River. Working together gives people an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn new skills and build relationships through a shared interest.
ONIM’s story illustrates how supporting a small business can create opportunities beyond the workshop: strengthening livelihoods while opening spaces for cooperation and closer connections across communities.
